Two steps forward, one step back…

I know the detox process is just that, a process.  And yet, when I have a day that is as stellar as yesterday, waking up this morning and finding myself back in the process is somewhat….um….disappointing.

I knew there was going to be trouble last night.  I roamed far and wide yesterday, stopping here, stopping there.  I stocked up on magnesium rich foods at the Co-op.  Who knew that cashews — my latest craving — were so rich in magnesium?  I really am beginning to think I need to find a good supplement.

I also found out, by doing a little Googling, that people with Fibromyalgia are often deficient in magnesium. I knew this…a long time ago.  I remember, back when we were still living in Schenectady (2000-2004), trying to supplement magnesium and not seeing a change.  But, I was also still consuming gluten.

I’ve learned that both  Leaky Gut Syndrome (also known as Increased Intestinal Permeability) as well as Celiac Disease lead to an inability to ….. um…..did I mention the Brain Frogs moved back in….absorb certain nutrients.  One the prime nutrients we are unable to absorb is….wait for it….that’s right…magnesium.  Seems like there are a bunch of pieces falling into place.

In addition, magnesium supplements come in a variety of forms, and some are more absorbable than others.  If you don’t absorb it, you get the laxative effect (think Milk of Magnesia).  So, off to do some homework.

BTW, you folks who consistently CRAVE chocolate?  Who would rather cut off your right arm than give up chocolate?  Guess what?  Magnesium.

Just saying.

What does magnesium do in the body?

Without going into an entire physiology lesson (which I’m probably not qualified to do, and would bore some of you to tears), lets just say that without sufficient Calcium available to the motor nerves, the muscles can’t tense; without sufficient Magnesium, they can’t relax.   At the cellular level.

Interesting, no?

Later today, I will come into posession of my very own Kombucha mother.  I’m very excited about this, but more on her later.  She deserves her very own post.
